One writer’s experience traversing the line between poverty and luxury in Cozumel

Every now and then we all want to get away, to some tropical country where there is no trouble, no bosses, no homework, and no bills to pay. A place that is not quite reality, where you can get away with tipping one dollar for everything, no matter where you go, and bargain out an item for half the price of the original offer. A place you would come home from and feel like you visited paradise because while you were there you did not have to care.

It might seem like there is nothing wrong with that, but our stress and desire to “get away” has turned many cities and many cultures into tourist resorts.
